Bitcoin is the first-ever cryptocurrency created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. Bitcoin is an open-source protocol for transferring value across the world without any middlemen like banks, financial institutions, or government.
The technology behind Bitcoin enables the transfer of bitcoins in a secure and uncensored way. The Bitcoin blockchain is transparent and anyone can check and verify the transactions happening on the blockchain.
Every bitcoin transaction is stored in the blocks in the blockchain and the transaction data is immutable. It means that the data once recorded cannot be changed forever. We can access every transaction from the origin of the Bitcoin blockchain.
New blocks are created every 10 minutes. So far 724,879 blocks are created and new blocks to the blockchain with the latest transactions. We can also check transactions based on block number(also known as block height) and block hash.
What is a Bitcoin Transaction ID or Transaction Hash?
A Bitcoin transaction id gives you the information you need to know about the transaction. Every transaction has an id known as a transaction id or transaction hash. The transaction id can give you all the information you need about the transaction.
How to Check Transaction Status using Bitcoin Transaction ID?
Let's say your friend has sent you some bitcoins and you haven't received the bitcoins yet. Now to check the status of the transaction, you need the transaction id or transaction hash.
Now you can ask your friend, the transaction id and follow the steps below to find the status of the transaction. If you have initiated the transaction, the wallet provider shows the transaction id after it is processed
1. Go to the Bitcoin block explorer. A block explorer is a website that presents you with all the data present in the blockchain.
2. Paste the transaction id/hash in the search bar. Here is an example transaction hash 58b3c906b46ae9589812e550fb7a7b1d0aded6d98fa8c51734d24b5ce82d8af5
3. Now you have the summary of the transaction. Below the hash, you can check the sender's address and receiver's address. See whether the receiver's address matches your address.
4. You can also check the amount of bitcoin that was transferred in the transaction and the transaction fees.
5. When the transaction is made, miners add the transaction to the new block. Then the transaction is said to be confirmed.
A bitcoin transaction confirmation happens when the transaction is added to a new block. A transaction needs to have at least one confirmation so that it cannot be reversed. As new blocks are added, the number of confirmations increases. Once there are 6 confirmations, the bitcoin transaction is said to be finalized. It can take up to one hour.
As you can see there are 5 confirmations in the above image. The transaction is already confirmed and the receiver has already received his bitcoin.
If you cannot find the transaction after you search it, then your friend might have probably lied to you. It will take up to 10 mins to get your transaction added to a block and get a confirmation.
Thus you can check and verify the transaction for yourself.
